How can I tell if an urgent "family emergency" call is real?

One of the cruellest scams is a phone call from a panicked "family member" - in an accident, in trouble, needing money right now, and please do not tell anyone. It can sound exactly like them, because a voice can now be cloned from a few seconds of audio, often lifted from a social-media video. Sounding right is no longer proof of who is calling. And if a call like this ever catches you or someone you love, remember it is built to fool anyone - the shame belongs to the scammer, never the person they targeted.

The pattern to recognise

Urgency. You must act immediately, before you have time to think or check.
Secrecy. "Don't tell Mum", "don't tell anyone" - so no one can talk you out of it.
An unusual payment. Gift cards, a bank transfer, or crypto - fast and hard to reverse. No genuine hospital, lawyer, or official is ever paid in gift cards.

When all three arrive together, it is almost certainly a scam, however real the voice sounds.

What to do

Hang up. It is fine to end the call, even if it feels rude.
Call the person back on the number you already have saved for them, or check with another family member.
Ask something only the real person would know.
Never send money, gift cards, or a transfer under pressure.

Agree a family safe word

Pick a simple word or phrase with your family in advance. If a panicked "relative" calls and cannot say it, you will know at once - a scammer with a cloned voice will not know it.
