A few tips for teaching online safety
- Keep it calm, not scary. Kids switch off when online safety is all warnings - frame it as skills for getting the most out of a place they enjoy.
- Teach habits, not just rules. A rule is forgotten by the weekend; a habit - pause before you share, check who is really asking - travels with them.
- Meet them where they are. Use the apps and situations they actually know, rather than hypothetical ones.
- Make asking for help normal. The most important lesson is that telling an adult about something worrying is never getting into trouble.
- Little and often beats once a year. A few minutes revisited regularly sticks better than one big assembly.
- Model it. Kids copy how the adults around them behave online more than what they are told to do.
Lesson guidance (trial)
We have started sharing guidance for building your own lessons - adaptable starting points, mapped to the Cyber Safe stories and the quests kids will play in the app. These are an early trial, not finished or verified plans: please adapt them, use what works, and tell us how to make them better. The app is in its first previews now, with a wider media experience to follow.
Join the app testing
We are opening a small testing group for the Cyber Safe with Monkleton app. Email us from your school email address - we use it to confirm you work in education - and we will add you, first come, first served, while spaces last. These are usually two different addresses, so also include your iCloud account ID (the Apple ID you use on your iPhone or iPad): that is where Apple's TestFlight sends your invite.
