How can I stay in control of in-app purchases and subscriptions?

Apps, games, and "free trials" are carefully designed to make spending feel painless and urgent - hiding real money behind gems and coins, and turning a free trial into a monthly charge you forget about. The fix is to add a moment of friction before any money moves, and to check what you are already paying for.

The tricks to recognise

  • In-app currencies. Gems, coins, and credits blur how much real money you are spending - one tap can be a few pounds, or many.
  • Manufactured urgency. Countdowns and "you're SO close!" prompts push you to buy on impulse, before you stop to think.
  • Free trials that auto-convert. A free trial usually becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel first. Always check what you will be charged, and when.
  • One-tap buying. A stored card and instant purchases remove every pause between wanting and paying.

Take back control

  • Require a password or your face for every purchase, so nothing is bought by a stray tap - or by a child.
  • Review your subscriptions and cancel the ones you do not use; most phones list them in one place.
  • Set a reminder a day or two before any free trial ends.
  • Sleep on impulse or big purchases - the "deal" is rarely as limited as it claims.
  • For children, turn on family purchase approvals so a grown-up confirms every spend.

If you only do one thing

Turn on the requirement for a password or your face before any purchase, then run through your subscriptions once and cancel what you have forgotten.
