How can I manage my digital footprint?
Your digital footprint is everything the internet holds about you - old accounts, social posts, sign-ups, and the profiles that data-broker sites assemble and sell. You cannot erase all of it, but you can shrink it, and a smaller footprint means less for scammers and strangers to work with.
What makes up your footprint
- Accounts you have forgotten - old shops, forums, and apps - each holding some of your details.
- Public posts and profiles going back years.
- People-search and data-broker sites that gather your name, address, phone, and relatives from public records.
- The trail of sign-ups tied to your main email.
How to shrink it
- Search yourself. Look up your name, and your email and phone, to see what comes up - so you know what is out there.
- Close old accounts you no longer use, rather than leaving them dormant with your data inside.
- Tighten who can see your current profiles. See how can I check who can see what I post?
- Opt out of data-broker sites, or use a removal service - what exists varies by country, so search for the brokers operating where you live.
- Keep a low-value secondary email and number for sign-ups, so your main ones stay private.
Keep it from growing back
- Share less identifying detail by default, and think before entering your real number or address into a new site.
- Revisit once or twice a year - footprints regrow as brokers refresh their data.
If you only do one thing
Search for yourself to see what is public, then close the oldest accounts you no longer use. It is the quickest way to shrink what is out there.
